The Honest Answer: It Depends on Three Things
People want one number. But the time it takes to plan an Indian wedding depends mostly on:
- Your date. A date in the busy winter wedding season, or on a popular muhurat, needs much earlier booking than an off-season date.
- Your guest count. A wedding for a few dozen people can come together quickly. A wedding for 400 needs far more lead time for venue, catering and stay.
- Your location. A destination wedding adds travel, site visits and guest logistics.
The Order to Book Things In
Whatever your timeline, book in this order. The things at the top are the hardest to get once dates fill up.
- Date (and muhurat, if your family follows one)
- Venue, because everything else depends on it
- Photographer and videographer, since good teams get booked early for popular dates
- Caterer, if not included with the venue
- Decorator
- Guest stay and travel, especially for out-of-town guests
- Outfits, which need time for fittings
- Makeup, mehendi, music, priest
- Invites, once venue and dates are fixed

A Small Wedding
A small, intimate wedding is much quicker to plan because there are fewer moving parts: one venue, one or two events, a short guest list. The main thing that slows it down is getting the date and venue you want. Read our guide to small and intimate weddings in India.
A Big Wedding (300 to 400+ Guests)
Large weddings need more time mainly because of:
- Fewer venues that can hold everyone
- Hotel rooms for out-of-town guests
- RSVPs, follow-ups and seating
- More events across more days
The guest list is usually the slowest part. Start it first, and expect it to change many times.
A Destination Wedding
Add time for a site visit, for guests to book travel, and for vendors who may need to travel to you. Our destination wedding guide covers this in detail.
Short on Time? How to Plan Faster
- Choose an off-season or weekday date. More venues and vendors will be free.
- Pick a venue that does food and decor in-house. Fewer vendors to find.
- Keep the guest list short. Fewer people means fewer decisions.
- Make decisions quickly. Set a deadline for each choice and stick to it.
- Keep the plan in one place so nothing gets lost.
Where Time Actually Goes
For many couples, the vendors aren't the hard part. It's the back-and-forth: chasing RSVPs, repeating the same details to relatives, finding that one quote in a long WhatsApp chat. Synapsium, built by our team at Ginger Films, keeps your dates, tasks, guests and budget in one place so you spend less time searching and more time deciding. It's free to use.
