Small Doesn't Mean Less

More couples are choosing smaller weddings: a few close family members and friends, one or two events, and time to actually talk to everyone. A small wedding can feel more emotional, not less, because every person there really matters to you.

Is a Small Wedding Right for You?

It usually suits couples who:

  • Want to spend time with each guest, not just greet them
  • Would rather spend on experiences, a home or travel
  • Find big crowds tiring
  • Have families who are open to a smaller celebration

The hardest part is often the family conversation, not the planning. Our post on when your parents want a different wedding can help.

How to Plan It

1. Decide your guest list first

Set a firm number and a simple rule, for example "only people we've both met in the last two years". A clear rule makes saying no easier.

2. Choose one or two events

Many small weddings combine haldi and mehendi, then have the ceremony and a dinner. Fewer events, more time at each.

3. Pick a venue that feels personal

A family home, a garden, a heritage home, a small resort or a restaurant you love. Small weddings can use places big weddings can't.

4. Spend where people will notice

With fewer guests, you can afford better food, a beautiful setting and thoughtful touches for everyone.

5. Plan the timing

Small weddings come together faster, but the date and venue you want can still go quickly. See how long it takes to plan an Indian wedding.

What Does a Small Wedding Cost?

We won't put a number on it, because it depends on your city, venue and choices. What we can say is that guest count is the biggest cost driver, so a small wedding gives you far more control. Read what decides wedding costs to plan your own number.

Making It Feel Special

  • Write personal notes for each guest
  • Let people speak. A few short toasts or blessings mean a lot in a small room
  • Sit everyone at one long table for the meal
  • Involve guests in rituals, like tying the haldi thread or applying mehendi
  • Keep phones away during the ceremony so everyone is present

What About Photos?

Small weddings are wonderful to photograph. There's more time for real moments, quiet portraits and every guest gets captured. A smaller team, or coverage of just the main day, is usually enough.

Two-Person Weddings and Elopements

Some couples go even smaller: just the two of them, a priest or registrar, and maybe two witnesses. If you're doing this, think about how you'll share it with family later. A short film or a small album can make family feel included even if they weren't there.
