The Simple Rule
When couples ask us how to reduce wedding costs, we suggest one question for every line in the budget: "Will we still have this in ten years?"
Food is eaten in a night. Flowers wilt in a day. Decor is taken down by morning. Your rings, your outfits (maybe), and your photos and film are what you keep. Cut generously from the first group. Protect the second.
Where Cuts Make the Biggest Difference
1. The guest list
This is the biggest lever by far. Every guest adds food, seating, gifts and often stay. Trimming the list does more than any other single cut.
2. The number of events
Combine events where you can. Haldi and mehendi on the same day, or a sangeet that doubles as the welcome dinner, saves an entire day of venue, food, decor and outfits.
3. The date
Off-season and weekday dates often get better prices from venues and vendors.
4. The venue
Venues that include food and basic decor can work out cheaper than hiring everything separately. A family home or community space can be beautiful with the right light and decor.
5. Decor
Use seasonal and local flowers. Reuse the same set-up across back-to-back events. Put the money into the one backdrop that will appear in most photos.
6. Invites and favours
Digital invites and simple, useful return gifts save more than people expect.
Where We'd Be Careful About Cutting
Photography and film
We're a photography and film studio, so take this with a pinch of salt. But it's the one part of a wedding you can't redo. If you need to save here, there are smart ways:
- Cover fewer events, not less quality. Full coverage of your main ceremony beats rushed coverage of everything.
- Choose a smaller team for smaller events.
- Skip extras you won't use, like a second album or extra reels.
- Don't pick on price alone. Ask to see full wedding galleries, not just highlights.
Our honest guide to finding a good photographer on a budget goes deeper, and this post explains why good coverage costs what it does.
Food quality
Fewer dishes, done well, beats a huge menu done badly. Cut the number of items, not the quality.
Comfort for guests
Water, shade, seating and fans cost little and decide how people remember the day.
Keep a Buffer
Whatever you save, keep part of it aside for surprises. There are always surprises. Our list of hidden wedding costs will help you spot them early.
