Heritage Venue Weddings: Planning and Photographing a Palace or Mansion Wedding

Why Couples Love Heritage Venues

A palace in Rajasthan, a Chettinad mansion in Tamil Nadu, a haveli near Agra, an old colonial bungalow: heritage venues come with history built in. Arches, courtyards, carved doors and old tiles give you a setting no decorator can fully recreate.

They also come with their own rules and quirks. Here's how to plan for them.

Questions to Ask a Heritage Venue

  1. What are the rules? Many heritage properties limit fire (havan), nails or tape on walls, loud music and late timings.
  2. Which areas can we use for which event? And which areas are off-limits?
  3. How many rooms are there? Heritage homes often have fewer rooms, so guests may need to stay nearby.
  4. Is there power backup? Old buildings can struggle with modern lighting and sound loads.
  5. How accessible is it? Stairs, uneven floors and long walks matter for elderly guests.
  6. Are drones allowed? Many heritage sites restrict them.
  7. Can our photographer visit before the wedding?

Photography at Heritage Venues

The light is different

Thick walls and small windows mean interiors can be dark, with strong window light. That's beautiful for portraits, but your photographer needs to plan for it, especially for evening rituals in courtyards.

Let the building do the work

Heritage spaces need less decor. A few flowers and lamps against old stone often photograph better than heavy decor that hides the architecture.

Plan portrait time

Build in time for couple portraits around the property, ideally in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon.

Respect the space

Good photographers know heritage rules: no climbing on fragile structures, no moving antiques, careful use of lights and equipment.

Planning Tips

  • Visit at the same time of day as your main ceremony to see the light
  • Keep the guest list realistic for the space
  • Book nearby stays early if the venue has limited rooms
  • Have a weather plan for open courtyards
  • Choose outfits that suit the setting: rich colours often look stunning against old stone and wood

Heritage Weddings and Destination Planning

Many heritage venues are destination weddings too. Our step-by-step destination guide and guide to destination locations will help you plan the rest.

From our side: heritage venues are some of our favourite places to work. We plan the light, angles and rules with the venue in advance, so on the day we can focus on you.
